PTE Core Writing: Why Many Candidates Find It Easier Than IELTS

How PTE Core Writing is scored, the Summarize Written Text and Write Email tasks, and why many immigration applicants find it easier than IELTS.

Writing is often the skill that presents challenges for Canadian immigration applicants in achieving their target language score. Many candidates perform well in Listening, Reading, and Speaking but struggle to obtain the Writing score required for higher Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) levels.

One reason for this challenge is that traditional English tests often require candidates to produce lengthy essays, develop complex arguments, and generate ideas under strict time pressure. PTE Core takes a different approach.

The PTE Core Writing section focuses on practical communication skills through structured tasks that are shorter, more predictable, and easier to prepare for through targeted practice. For many immigration applicants, this makes Writing one of the most approachable sections of the test. As a result, PTE Core can be an attractive option for applicants targeting CLB 8 or CLB 9 for Canadian immigration.

How Writing Contributes to Your Overall PTE Core Score

Unlike some language tests where Writing is assessed only through dedicated writing tasks, PTE Core uses an integrated scoring system.

This means your Writing score is influenced not only by tasks in the Writing module but also by certain Reading and Listening tasks that require written responses.

Tasks That Contribute to the Writing Score

Because Writing is evaluated across multiple sections of the exam, candidates have several opportunities to strengthen their Writing score throughout the test.

Question Types in the PTE Core Writing Section

The PTE Core Writing module contains two question types: Summarize Written Text and Write Email. Together, these tasks assess a candidate's ability to understand information, communicate effectively in writing, and use accurate grammar and vocabulary in practical situations.

Unlike essay-based writing tests, the PTE Core Writing section focuses on shorter, structured responses. Candidates are not required to develop lengthy arguments or discuss broad social issues. Instead, they must demonstrate their ability to process information and communicate clearly within specific task requirements.

Summarize Written Text

In this task, candidates read a passage of up to 200 words and write a 25- to 50-word summary of the main ideas within 10 minutes.

This question evaluates both Reading and Writing skills. Candidates must identify the key information, understand relationships between ideas, and present the content accurately and concisely. Strong performance requires effective summarization, grammatical accuracy, and the ability to express complex information in a clear and compact format.

Write Email

In this task, candidates are presented with a situation and a set of instructions that must be addressed in an email response. They are required to write an email of 80 to 120 words within 9 minutes.

The task assesses practical written communication skills, including organization, coherence, grammar, vocabulary, and appropriate tone. Depending on the scenario, candidates may need to write a formal, semi-formal, or informal email while ensuring that all required points are addressed clearly.

Writing Skills Assessed

Although the Writing module contains only two question types, it evaluates a broad range of language abilities, including:

  • Grammar and sentence structure
  • Vocabulary usage
  • Written communication
  • Organization and coherence
  • Clarity and accuracy
  • Reading comprehension and summarization
  • Appropriate tone and style

Because there are only two task types in the Writing section, many candidates find that targeted practice and familiarity with the format can lead to significant score improvements.

Important Note About Spelling

Candidates should be aware that the PTE Core test does not provide an automated spell-checker, grammar checker, or autocorrect feature during the Writing section. Any spelling, typing, capitalization, or punctuation errors remain exactly as entered and may affect the final score.

For this reason, it is important to leave sufficient time to review responses before moving to the next question. Developing accurate typing and proofreading habits can be just as important as improving grammar and vocabulary when preparing for the PTE Core Writing section.
