PTE Core Rescore: Cost, Process, Success Rate, and When It Is Worth It

If your PTE Core result is unexpectedly different from your expected performance, you may be able to request a rescore. However, rescoring is not simply a second chance to receive a higher mark. Your score can increase, decrease, or remain unchanged, and any new score permanently replaces the original.

Pearson also provides a separate technical review if you believe a microphone or recording issue affected your Speaking performance. These are two different processes, so it is important to choose the right one.

How to Request a PTE Core Rescore

You cannot simply request a rescore from the result screen in myPTE.

To apply:

1. Contact Pearson Customer Support by phone.
2. Request the rescore within 14 calendar days of your score becoming available.
3. Provide the required test and account information.

From the PTE Core Score Report, the most useful information to have ready when calling Pearson about a rescore is:

• Your Name
• PTE ID / Test Taker ID
• Registration ID: this is especially important for identifying the specific test
• Test Date
• Test Name: PTE Core
• Score Report Code, if Pearson asks for it
• Your current overall and communicative skill scores, particularly the score you are questioning

Pearson specifically uses the Registration ID to identify a particular PTE test in support-related cases; it can be found on the Score Report or booking confirmation.

4. Pay the US$160 rescore fee by phone.
5. Wait for Pearson to issue the reviewed result.

Pearson currently states that rescore payments can only be processed by phone.

Important: If you are considering a rescore, do not book another PTE test first. Once another test is scheduled, your previous test is no longer eligible for rescoring.

When Might a Rescore Be Worth Considering?

A PTE Core rescore is not risk-free. If the resulting score is lower, you cannot choose to keep your original score. Pearson immediately replaces the previous result with the new one.

A rescore may make sense if:

• One skill score is dramatically different from your normal performance.
• Your Speaking or Writing result seems inconsistent with how you performed on test day.
• Your official result is substantially different from several recent practice or mock-test results.
• You are confident that your responses were completed correctly and the result genuinely surprises you.

What Is the PTE Core Rescore Success Rate?

Pearson does not publish an official PTE Core rescore success rate. Therefore, claims online that a particular percentage of rescores result in an increase should be treated cautiously.

Pearson itself warns that a score can increase or decrease, and the PTE Core handbook describes a score change as unlikely.

What Are Test Takers Saying on Reddit?

Recent Reddit experiences show why there is no simple answer.

Some candidates report large improvements. In one 2026 discussion, a test taker reported Speaking increasing from 77 to 90 after rescoring, and another recent discussion described a Speaking score increasing from 59 to 90. These are individual experiences, not evidence of a typical result.

Others report the opposite. A PTE Core test taker said their scores changed after a previous rescore but their Writing score decreased, and another recent PTE Core candidate reported that their score decreased after review.

There are also candidates whose scores do not change at all. One recent Reddit user reported gaining three points from one rescore but receiving no change after rescoring a later test.

These Reddit reports are anecdotal and should not be treated as a statistical success rate. They do, however, reinforce Pearson's warning: a rescore can move in either direction.

What To Do After the Rescore?

If your score changes, Pearson reissues your Score Report and the previous version is no longer available.

Pearson recommends requesting a rescore before using the result in an application.

If you have already shared the result and it changes after rescoring, you are responsible for informing the organization that received it.

For candidates using PTE Core for Canadian immigration, this is particularly important if the result has already been provided to IRCC.

PTE Core Rescore vs Technical Review

A low Speaking score does not always mean that you need a rescore.

If you believe the problem was caused by your microphone or audio recording, Pearson provides a separate technical review.

A technical review cannot increase or decrease your score. It only determines whether a technical issue affected your recordings.

If Pearson confirms a technical problem, it refunds both the technical-review fee and the test fee, or provides a replacement voucher where applicable. Pearson says the technical-review outcome is normally provided within 15 business days after payment.

Rescore or Retake PTE Core?

The key question is why your result was lower than expected.

First, review your PTE Core score report and identify where you lost marks. A PTE Core rescore is useful when you have a genuine reason to question your result, but it should not be treated as a way to simply try for a few extra points.

But if your Score Report highlights weaknesses that also appeared during preparation, such as pronunciation, fluency, writing accuracy, listening, or specific question types, a PTE Core retake after targeted preparation is usually the more practical route.

Remember to make the rescore decision before booking your next test.

If the result appears reasonable, focus on the affected PTE Core question types, use targeted PTE Core practice, and complete a PTE Core mock test before your next attempt.
